Aransas National Wildlife Refuge
Just 45 minutes from Victoria, the wildlife refuge covers nearly 115,000 acres on the San Antonio Bay. The refuge’s grasslands and marshes are home to thousands of migratory birds. You may see geese, herons, egrets, pelicans, ducks, and shorebirds. Driving and walking trails, picnic areas, and an observation tower make it easy to enjoy a full day at the refuge. Aransas is open every day from half an hour before sunrise until half an hour after sunset.
Berclair Mansion
Less than an hour southwest of Victoria in Berclair, you’ll find one of the state’s most beautifully preserved mansions. Berclair Mansion was built in 1936 by the heiress of a ranching fortune. The fireproof home was built of steel and 60 tons of concrete. The mansion contains 22 rooms, including two grand halls, ten bedrooms, and five baths. The priceless antiques collected by the heiress and her sisters are still in place. Berclair Mansion is open for guided tours the last Sunday of every month at 1 pm and 2:30 pm.
Chisolm Trail Heritage Museum
Explore the Old West of circa 1866 at this museum about 30 minutes northwest of Victoria. Learn about cowboys, cattle drives, and the Texas Longhorn. The museum is located in the historic former Knights of Pythias hall, built in 1903. It’s open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4:30 pm.
Presidio La Bahia
The Presidio is an outstanding Spanish frontier fort in Goliad County. The massive stone fort dates from the 1700s. It was the site of the Goliad Massacre and other important events of the Texas Revolution. Presidio La Bahia is open daily from 9 am to 4:45 pm.
Texas Independence Wine Trail
Visit six wineries at your own pace and taste the independent wines of Texas! Wineries on the tour include Lavaca Bluffs Vineyard & Winery, Majek Vineyard & Winery, Whistling Duck Vineyards & Winery, Rohan Meadery, Rosemary's Vineyard and San Ducero Vineyards. Stay at a bed and breakfast or hotel along the way and make a weekend of it.
